Sen. Jeff Merkley Named Second-Most Effective Democratic Senator in 116th Congress by Non-Partisan Center for Effective Lawmaking
The Center for Effective Lawmaking (CEL) announced the release of the Legislative Effectiveness Scores (LES) for the recently completed 116th Congress (2019-21).
Sen. Jeff Merkley of Oregon was rated the second most-effective Senate Democrat. Sen. Merkley easily won his 2020 bid for re-election. During the 116th Senate, he sponsored 112 bills, eight of which passed the Senate, and five of which became law, in areas ranging from water resources, to Native American treaties, to international affairs. This legislative accomplishment was a dramatic increase in lawmaking relative to the 115th Congress, during which Sen. Merkley sponsored only 49 bills.
